DNA registration is not mandatory at this time, but the ABRA has made the promise to it’s customers that as soon as 50% of the new litters are DNA’d, the other 50% will be required to do so.  Start now!

DNA kits are now available, Click here!

Puppies that match out of 2 DNA’d parents will receive the DNA VIP designation and that designation will be on the temporary puppy certificates as well as the permanent ABRA registration certificate.

How DNA is used for Parentage

• Almost every cell in a dog contains DNA
• Each of these cells has one complete copy of the DNA that is “code” for that dog
• Rubbing off some cells from the inside of the cheek gives us enough DNA to compare that dog to its parents.

how dna works

How DNA is used for Parentage

• DNA Extraction
• A swab containing cheek cells are placed in a solution
• Specific regions of the DNA are amplified (copied 60 billion times) using BioPet designed primers
• Reading the DNA
• BioPet has 2 ABI 3730 DNA Analyzers used in DNA fragment analysis.
• Genotyping
• ABI GeneMappersoftware is used in interpreting fragment analysis data.
• Checking Genotypes
• A manual review of data is performed for each sample and marker.
• Format and upload
• Data is uploaded to the DNA World Pet Registryfor DNA Proof of Parentage testing

How Genetic Parentage Matching Works

genetic parentage matching

• The combination of alleles specific to each dog make up the genotype.
• A puppy inherits one allele from each parent.
• DNA Proof of Parentage compares the pup’s genotype against the dam and potential sire’s genotypes.
• A potential sire is disqualified if it does not contain one of the necessary alleles needed to complete the pup’s genetic profile.

The BioPet Vet Lab Marker Panel

BioPet’sDNA Proof of Parentage consists of 16 microsatellite markersCompatible with commonly used panelsBioPet’spanel contains all 14 markersusedinAKC parentage.

BioPet’spanel contains 6 markers used in ISAG parentage.

BioPet Vet Lab can further analyze any test using a variety of proprietary markers  *raw marker data can be made available to a club upon request**  Each lab may report data on these markers slightly different

• Cost effective DNA collection materials and DNA processing
• Registered dogs’ DNA is permanently stored in the system and is available for future testing
• Only new puppies require new DNA samples
